Being a first-time home buyer in Central Texas can be scary. Especially now.
But it doesn’t have to be.
The solution? Prepare before you search, and you’ll find that the process isn’t only “not so bad,” but it can also be even a little bit fun.
- Get pre-approved for your mortgage before you start looking. Understand the type(s) of mortgages you’re eligible for–VA, FHA, First-Time Homebuyer, Adjustable Rate, and more. Your lender will look at your credit score and guide you through types and rates.
- Know what you’re looking for in a home. One-story or two? Four bedrooms or more? New construction or existing? Having an idea of what you’re looking for can make your search not quite so overwhelming.
- Think about whether your home should be move-in ready or if you’re willing to do a bit of fixing up. Paint and new flooring can be quick and easy upgrades. But if you’re are thinking of renovations–kitchen and bathroom upgrades, moving walls, or even adding on–the process can be months longer than in the past, and add significant expense to your housing costs.
- Be on the same page as your partner. If you’re buying your home with someone else, it’s hugely helpful to have a general agreement about what you’re looking for. Is location more important? Or the size or type of house? Do you want a home and yard that require maintenance? Or something easy to manage?
- Breathe. Inventory is lower than in the past, but homes are still coming on the market.
While homes are moving quickly, you’ll find that you have a bit more time to consider properties than you did even a few months ago.
